On Saturday 14th June, about 30 members and friends, visited six churches around Shawbury airfield.
St Mary the Virgin, Astley.
Small Norman church with an interior which was transformed by the 1933 rood screen, alter and reredos by Sir Charles Nicholson.
St Mary Magdelen, Hadnall.
It has a 13th century nave although restored in 1872/3 when the chancel was added. It has several stained glass windows by Kempe.
All Saints, Grinshill.
Small ‘neo-Norman’ church of about 1840 and has a distinctive Italianate tower.
St Andrew’s, Stanton-upon-Hine-Heath.
Early Norman church set in a circular churchyard. The 13th century tower is supported by massive buttresses.
Morton Corbet.
Outstanding church, next to the ruined castle and half-timbered old rectory.
St Mary, Shawbury.
The church has a notable Norman font, Jacobean pulpit and 18th century chandelier.
