SHROPSHIRE HISTORIC CHURCHES TRUST

St Andrew, Shifnal

Shropshire is richly endowed with historic churches. They are ancient places of worship bearing witness to eternal truths. Here we can experience beauty, peace, space, order and silence which are important in our busy lives. The Historic Churches also remind us that we are but one generation of many gone before. In our turn, we have the privilege and responsibility of caring for them.

* Shropshire has over 350 churches in regular use.
* Most of them are over 700 years old.
* Many are listed buildings signifying they are of outstanding architectural and historic interest.
* Responsibility for maintenance falls on the Parish.
* They are not maintained or financed by the Church Commissioners, the Diocese or the State.
* In Shropshire many churches are in rural areas where the congregations are often small.
* Such congregations need help to cope with repairs that are often urgent and expensive.
